Maui Wowie

Sharing is caring!

I know, the title is a little corny, but we had a great time in Maui. I’ll cover more in future posts, but today, I want to cover the highlights. We went there with my son and daughter-in-law.

First off, Hawaii is very strict about Covid requirements. You have to fill out a few forms and if you are unvaccinated, you have to have a NAAT negative covid test taken within 72 hours of when your last flight leaves for Hawaii. The test has to be from one of their approved providers.

Martha got hers at Walgreens and I got mine at CVS. We found out that Walgreens has a rapid one and she got her test in about an hour. CVS didn’t have that option but said it would be within 1 to 2 days. We were ready to leave for Indy and I didn’t have mine yet.

So, we prayed about it and headed for Indy. As we were driving around 465, my test finally came in. Nothing like cutting it close.

We stayed in a Condo near the shore and right across from a park. You could easily see the water and we had tremendous views of the sunset, with palm trees in the park.

We did a lot of different things. We drove the road to Hana, drove to the top of a volcano, went to the beach, tried a little fishing, went to an arboretum, saw waterfalls, saw a historic church, ate a lot of good food, and learned how to play Catan.

One thing you need to know about Maui is that as great as it is, it is very expensive. Groceries are about twice what they are here. Gas is around $4.50 a gallon and it is rare to find a meal under $15.

When I checked on renting a car, I found that renting one at the airport would cost almost $1,000 for the week. So I found a site called Turo, where people can rent you their private cars and rented one for a little over $300. It was easy to do. He left it in the parking lot and we just picked it up there and then left it there when we were done. It actually worked better than a car rental company.

I made a mistake on our reservations. I thought I had reserved the condo for the whole time. But around noon on the 11th, I got a call from the housekeeper. She said she needed to clean our unit for people coming in that afternoon and our stuff was still there.

I checked my reservation and realized it was only through the 11th. We weren’t leaving till the 12th. So we had to find another room for that night. The cheapest we could find on Maui was a 1 bedroom apartment for $341. So we took it.

We found that most of the people we met were very friendly and helpful. That made the trip even more enjoyable. I’ll post more about some of the things we did later.
