A Train Ride and a Charming Village

Sharing is caring!

The morning after we went to the Viking Village, we drove about 45 minutes to ride a scenic train to the top of a mountain. This is a popular attraction in Norway and is highly rated by most people.

The name of the train is Flamsbana on the Flam railway. It’s in a picturesque little town called Flam. It was a nice ride and they stopped at a really nice waterfall for us to get out and get good pictures. They also played music while a lady danced near the waterfall.

I thought the ride and waterfall were relaxing, but I wouldn’t rate it as the best part of our trip. It was nice to look at the scenery and not have to pay attention to my driving.

After that, we headed toward a town called Geranger. We drove several hours and much of it was along the tops of the mountains above the tree line. That was a whole different kind of scenic.

We weren’t able to get accommodations in the town, so we stayed in a town near there. Geranger is a quaint little town at the end of a fjord and in between two steep mountains.

To get to it, you drive down a road with a lot of hairpin curves in it that goes down rapidly. It;s not a very fast road.

We took a ferry down the fjord and they told us the history of the area on prerecorded devices that you put in your ear. It was quite interesting. People actually had farms on the side of steep mountains. One of them, they actually tied a rope around themselves when they worked in the fields. There were also several waterfalls that ran into the fjord.

We had lunch at a restaurant near the docks and it was very good. We enjoyed the scenery as we ate. Later, I went on a sailboat in the fjord because they gave you a chance to try to catch a fish on the sailboat. That day, a cruise boat was at the Harbor. They told me when cruise boats come in, it shuts the fishing down. I didn’t catch anything.

They did tell me about a restaurant above the town called Westera, which they said was very good. We headed there for supper. About a half mile, before we arrived, the road was a narrow one-lane road up the side of the mountain. If someone were coming the other way, one person would have to back up.

When we got there, they asked if we had reservations. I knew it wouldn’t be cheap. Most meals were $35 to $40. We did meet a guy from Idaho there who used to live in Fort Wayne and had been to the Bluffton street fair. We ordered and waited for the food.

I think some kind of witchcraft was involved. Most of us agreed that we have never tasted food that good in our life. Every bite of everything was delicious. It was a little crazy.
