Venice of Italy

Sharing is caring!

I think it’s odd that we call it Italy, but there they call it Italia. Venice is actually Venezio. If that’s what they call them, why do we change the names of their country? We may never know.

Anyway, we took a trip to Italy in November. Italy is very romantic and has a lot of ancient buildings. It’s got a lot to see and we only had time to see some of the major attractions. One thing that surprised me was how populated it was. There are a lot of big cities in Italy.

In this post, I’m going to talk about our visit to Venice. Venice is actually two parts. There is the large city of Venice and then there is the historic Venice which is actually an island. There are no cars or bicycles on the island and the only way around is by walking. Approximately 45,000 people live on it.

If you have a car, you have to find a place to park it and then find a way to the island. Sometimes, you have to reserve a parking spot ahead of time as they are limited. We chose to take a ferry to the island that included parking.

The island has a lot of historic buildings and canals. There are a lot of walking roads on the island, but at every canal, there was a bridge that required stairs to access. This made it difficult for Marty, as stairs are difficult for her.

The city is beautiful and very charming. Most of the city is made up of shops and restaurants with some historic buildings thrown in.

Of course, while we were there, we had to take a Gondola ride. Part of the way, our Gondaleer sang and whistled while we glided through the city. It was very relaxing and romantic.

I took a little time and went to St Mark’s Square. It was an amazing Square with Saint Mark’s Basilica, San Marcos bell tower, and Doges Palace. It really was stunning. I took some pics but then had to go across the city to get back to Marty.

My GPS wasn’t working very well so I got lost and it took a while to find her. Despite that, we really enjoyed our visit to Venice and I would recommend it if you get a chance. Just remember to reserve your parking ahead of time.
