I want to talk about the other things we saw and did in Italy. We landed in Milan. We booked a nice older hotel in Milan for the first night. Even though it was November and we had driven through a snowstorm to get to the airport, it felt more like October. The leaves were yellow and starting to fall.
The next morning, we went to Sforza Castle in Milan. It was very difficult to find a parking spot. We watched as one guy found a small spot and repeatedly backed into the car behind and in front of him as he worked his way into the spot. His bumper was touching the car behind him when he finally got in.
The castle was very large and cool. Then we had a three-hour drive to Venice. I already covered Venice in an earlier post.
Later on our trip, Marty learned that the sculpture ‘The David’ was in Naples. We had booked a Villa in Tuscany one night (Which was very nice), so we decided to go see it. We went to this out of the Art Gallery and waited in a short line. We got inside and found out ‘The David’ was in the second room.
We don’t have any pictures of David and we don’t really know what he looked like, but when you walk in and see the sculpture, you think “Yep, that’s David”. It’s kind of weird. It’s a 17-foot sculpture of him ‘au naturel’ .
That afternoon, we went to see the leaning tower of Pisa. When you see it, two things stand out. How big it is and how much it really leans. If you go inside, it feels like one of those funny houses with a tilted floor. There are also other magnificent buildings near it.
The story behind it is that they started to build it and got about three stories done. Then it started settling and leaning. There was war for about a century, so that held them up till they got around to building the rest of it. By then, it had stabilized enough that it didn’t topple over.
We had always heard about how good the food was in Italy. We ate at a lot of different places and had decent food, but nothing really blew our socks off. I had a vegetable pizza at one of our hotels that I liked.
All in all, we enjoyed our trip to Italy. It was more populated than I expected, but there are so many historical places and things to see. You could easily spend two weeks or more there to see things at a slower pace.
