On May the 9th we got up and headed for The Giants Causeway. We didn’t know much about it, but it was famous, so we decided to see it. Less than a mile from our room for the night, we came across a small castle called Kilclief Castle. It wasn’t open, but it shows you how common castles are in Ireland.
The Giants Causeway is in Northern Ireland, which is actually a part of the UK. As we were driving toward the Giants Causeway, we drove by a very scenic beach. Marty mentioned that it was one of the most beautiful places she had seen.
We got to the Giants Causeway and there were parking lots to park in and quite a walk to get there. The Giants Causeway is a small area of beach where rocks in a hexagon shape are tightly together and some of them are different heights.
It is different from anything I’d ever seen before. It was very interesting and fun to explore. I’d say the whole area is only a couple hundred feet long. There were a lot of people visiting it though. Definitely worth stopping for.
As we left there, we saw a sign pointing to Dunseverick Castle. It surprised us how well marked it was, but was only a few rock pillars left of it, when other castles weren’t marked at all.
From there we drove to Ballintoy Harbor. It was one of the most interesting and pretty places I’d ever seen. The problem is that pictures don’t do it justice. Game of Thrones was filmed there. It was an old harbor with a few stone buildings and very scenic.
In one of the stone buildings was a small café. We ate there. The food was very good. I was impressed with how many choices of dessert they had. I chose pavlova. It is made with egg whites and berries. It’s very light but so delicious.
In the afternoon, we headed to Antrim Castle grounds. On the way we saw another scenic spot for pics. It’s hard to see in the photos, but there was a rainbow in the water. Also, the small island had a rope walkway to it. Very beautiful!
Antrim Castle grounds is much like a cool park on the edge of a city. It runs along a small river. There are a few ruins of the castle still standing. It may not have been as impressive as some of the other castles we had seen, but it was still very nice.
It seems like we saw a lot, but all of this was in only one day! For the evening we stayed at a place called seal cabin. It was a tiny cabin that the owners rented out. It was small, but very cute! There were also views of the water from it. The owners were also very nice like everyone else in Ireland.
