Updates on our Farm in Chile and an expensive mistake

Sharing is caring!

I went down to our farm in Chile again at the end of January. The weather was absolutely beautiful. I was there for a little over two weeks. Most days were in the seventies and it didn’t rain the whole time I was there. One morning it was cloudy and one day was partly cloudy. Other than that, it was blue skies all day long.

One day, I went to the birthday celebration of my friend Marcelo. He had a cookout with all kinds of meat and lots of other good food. I met his family and we had a good time. He mentioned that the temperature was perfect at 27 degrees. I said that was about the temperature at home in Indiana. The difference was he meant Celcius and I was talking about Fahrenheit.

I finished my non-electric refrigerator. It was similar to springhouses that they used for food storage before they had electricity. Here’s a video of it.

I also varnished my cabin. I especially liked the way my exterior door turned out when it was done. The varnish really brought out the colors.

I created a path to the fjord that my farm goes to. Now, I can try fishing there and see if I catch anything. That took a lot of bamboo cutting to get through.

While I was down there, one of my goals was to buy a mini excavator for the farm. It will be useful for putting in roads and a driveway. I found and bought one, but I haven’t tried it out yet. I hope to in April.

My friend Esteban hooked me up with an electrician to wire my cabin for electricity. Once that is done, I can start to finish the inside.

All in all, it was a successful trip and the area is still beautiful.

Now for the expensive mistake. I drove to Waterloo to catch a train to Chicago early in the morning. Then after a 3 and 1/2 hour ride, my son picked me up at the train station and took me to the airport. He dropped me off and I went inside. I was ready to go to the counter to check in when I reached for my passport and realized it was still at home.

That is a very sinking feeling. I was on the phone for two hours to change my flight to the next day. It cost me another $900. Then I rented a car to drive much of the way back home to meet my wife and get the passport. Then I drove back and spent the night at my son’s apartment before leaving the next day.

When you travel internationally, NEVER, EVER forget your passport!
